Activities At Ashfield
At Ashfield Nursing Home, we use our activities as an opportunity to fulfil the physical, psychological and social needs of our residents.
In between the group sessions we have time for 1-2-1 activities (1 resident with 1 Activity Assistant). These sessions provide undivided attention for personalised care, allowing our Activity Assistants to address unique needs/preferences and foster deeper connections.
Everyday we do one group activity in the morning and one group activity in the afternoon. This is time for our residents to come together and participate in club sessions (e.g., gardening club) or watch entertainment (e.g., movies, musicians, performers etc).

🎪 Parties
Parties are vibrant community events like the Summer Fayre and Bonfire Night. The atmosphere is lively and the community spirit is high.
We go all out and decorate our home to match the theme. We scrap the usual activities and do something extra special like theatre performances and horse petting.. And lastly, we change the menu choices for something more complimentary to the event.
🍾 Special Days
Special days are exclusive to those closest to us and our residents.
We choose occasions such as Halloween that still allow us to decorate our home and switch up our usual activities. However, this time our catering teams takes a step back from dishing up a unique menu and instead we enjoy the usual food options.
🎉 Celebrations
Celebrations, like Mother’s Day and Remembrance Day, are more solemn and intimate with only those or visiting taking part.
We still decorate the home but we hold back on special activities and instead pursue an more relaxed celebration. Our activities instead with try to be more reflective of the topic.
🎁 Birthdays
We never miss a birthday!
We get to know our residents and their preferences so when the day comes, we can make put a big smile on their face knowing that’s what they wanted to do.

Physiological Needs
Physiological needs involve activities that enhance physical well-being.
These are activities that promote and maintain physical health and mobility.
E.g., A session where residents participate in low-impact exercises like stretching, chair yoga, or light aerobics. This kind of activity helps with circulation, flexibility, and can prevent muscle atrophy.

Psychological Needs
Psychological needs focus on mental engagement and personal autonomy.
Sessions offer residents choices, challenges, and opportunities for personal development, fostering a sense of competence and control over their environment.
E.g., Art Therapy Workshop": Residents are provided with various art materials and the freedom to create without any strict guidelines, promoting creativity, self-expression, and the joy of mastering a new skill or technique.

Sociological Needs
Sociological needs are about fostering social bonds and community involvement.
Such activities encourage interaction, collaboration, and shared decision making, helping residents feel valued within their community.
E.g., Gardening club – Residents form a club where they:
• Plan/design: Come together monthly to decide what plants to be grown each session.
• Discuss: Share gardening tips, past experiences, and personal stories related to gardening.
• Appoint a chair: A resident is elected as chairperson to lead meetings, ensuring everyone’s voice is heard.
